Research group "Heliophysics"
The research of the Heliophysics Group is aimed at an improved understanding of our immediate cosmic neighbourhood. The structure of the latter is determined by the gravitational, electromagnetic, and plasma-gas-dynamical interaction of the Sun with the surrounding interstellar medium. While the gravitational interaction mainly defines the structure of our planetary system including the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud, it is also responsible for changing the flow of interstellar neutral gas. The Sun's electromagnetic radiation influences the ionization of the latter and its corpuscular radiation – known as the solar wind – shapes, by its interaction with the interstellar plasma flow, the heliosphere.
